Atlanta! There’s a lot of talking going on, but I want to set the record straight. Yes, we are preparing to welcome thousands of visitors to our city for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, but our motivation doesn’t begin and end there.

Since being elected, my administration has worked to move Atlanta forward by bringing down violent crime, employing thousands of young people, building or preserving units of affordable housing, paving miles of roads, filling thousands of potholes, and relocating individuals experiencing homelessness into temporary or permanent housing.

I want Atlanta to be the best city in the nation to raise a child. That’s my North Star – and every day we work towards meeting that goal. Through our work and commitment to Atlanta, we continue to invest in housing, specifically our rapid housing initiative for our unsheltered population. Housing is foundational. Everyone deserves a roof over their head, fresh food on their table, and opportunities to thrive in our city’s workforce.

This month, we relocated individuals who were living in a homeless encampment in the Sweet Auburn neighborhood. These individuals received keys to their own unit at Welcome House, a low-income housing apartment complex that offers transitional and long-term support to residents. This support includes wraparound services, individualized case management and additional resources.

As your Mayor, I am committed to housing Atlantans in need with dignity, while safely closing dozens of encampments that pose health and public safety concerns to the city. Our investments are promises to the community. When we come together with compassion, coordination and commitment, we move closer to securing safe, quality housing for all Atlantans.

Showcase Atlanta: Big Events, Local Talent

Atlanta’s small businesses now have a powerful new tool to grow. The Showcase Atlanta Vendor Directory is live, connecting local entrepreneurs—caterers, DJs, florists, AV techs, planners, and more—with the major events headed to our city, including FIFA World Cup 2026™, Super Bowl LXII, conventions, and community festivals.

This City-led effort ensures that local businesses aren’t just watching from the sidelines—they’re front and center as direct participants in Atlanta’s biggest moments. Even residents planning weddings, school fundraisers, or block parties can use the directory to hire neighborhood talent.

** What’s going on in Atlanta?
------------------------------------------------------------

Ted Turner Bridge Reopens

The Ted Turner Bridge is officially back open! One of the most traveled and historic gateways into downtown Atlanta reopened this month after being closed for seven years for repairs and reconstruction. The bridge, a major connection point into downtown Atlanta, now links Forsyth and Spring Streets, and provides a direct route to destinations like Mercedes-Benz Stadium and eventually, the Centennial Yards development.

The bridge's reopening is part of a broader effort to modernize Atlanta's transportation network and improve connectivity within the downtown area. The original bridge, built in 1922, became structurally deficient and required extensive repairs and widening. The reconstruction also included improvements for pedestrians and cyclists, enhancing accessibility to the downtown area and entertainment district.

The reopening of the bridge is expected to alleviate traffic congestion on surrounding streets, particularly during peak hours. This has been a long time coming but surrounding communities and small businesses in the area will finally be able to benefit from the renewed access and connectivity. Special shoutout to Atlanta Department of Transportation for their efforts to upgrade our city’s infrastructure through smart community-centered investments.

Goodr Community Market Opens on Edgewood

No one thinks about food insecurity until there isn’t food on their table, but Jasmine Crowe-Houston has been feeding Atlantans for more than a decade. Since its inception, Goodr has reached several significant milestones and with the help of Mayor Andre Dickens, Invest Atlanta and BeOnEdgewood, they experienced another one this month. Goodr opened its new public-facing community market and deli model in one of Atlanta’s most underscored food deserts. While the market is open to the community, 200 families and seniors from Atlanta’s District 5 will receive free monthly groceries for one year through a special initiative supported by Councilmember Liliana Bakhtiari. Located in the Sweet Auburn neighborhood, the Goodr Community Market offers dignified affordable food access in a setting designed to uplift and empower. Next time you’re visiting Sweet Auburn, be sure to stop by and grab a sandwich from the Little Loaf Deli. You can also pay it forward by purchasing a Goodr Love Token for a
neighbor in need.

SYEP Interns Participate in Inaugural Atlanta Habitat Youth Build

The group project strikes again. In the spirit of collaboration and partnership, the City of Atlanta joined Wells Fargo, Atlanta Falcons and Atlanta Habitat for Humanity for its inaugural youth build. The event brought together 50 youth from the Mayor’s Summer Youth Employment Program and 15 Wells Fargo ATL HBCU Fellows. After a kick-off celebration at the Atlanta Habitat warehouse, each youth rolled up their sleeves, grabbed a hard hat and went to work. The purpose of the youth build was to encourage and engage our city’s youth in this critical service-learning experience while combatting housing insecurity. The projects included 2 construction projects, a Brush with Kindness home rehabilitation and a library renovation at Humphries Elementary School.

Sylvan Hills II Breaks Ground in Southwest Atlanta

New affordable housing is coming to Southwest Atlanta. Sylvan Hills II will be the 2nd phase of the redevelopment that was formerly an apartment community known as Sylvan Circle Apartments. Sylvan Hills II is currently planned to be a 233-unit newly constructed family apartment community that will consist of one, two and three-bedroom units along with a variety of construction types including three-story garden style walk-up apartments, two-story walk-up carriage homes and two-story townhome style units. This development will be 100% affordable, with all of the units reserved for residents with incomes at or below 80% of the Area Median Income with monthly rents ranging from approximately $1,149 - $2,100.

Mayor Dickens, HUD Regional Administrator Denise Cleveland-Leggett, and Councilmember Antonio Lewis along with several developers delivered remarks at the groundbreaking ceremony, noting the collective effort it takes to make an impact. Brick by brick, Atlanta Housing is combating homelessness and building affordable housing for our families.

Phase I of the redevelopment of Sylvan Hills was a newly constructed 184-unit affordable senior housing development. This development was completed in late 2022 and is now fully occupied.

The Dream Supports Scholarships for Atlanta’s Youth

For the second year, Mayor Andre Dickens hosted his signature event, “The Dream: A Vision for Atlanta’s Future” at the historic Fox Theatre. This event, which is a fundraiser for the Mayor’s Youth Scholarship Program, celebrated young professionals, creatives, and entrepreneurs and support Atlanta’s future leaders. All proceeds from the event support scholarships for youth pursuing higher education. Although it’s designed as a networking opportunity for young professionals, it is also a celebration of Atlanta’s culture that features entertainment. This year, the event included performances by Rick Ross, Trinidad James, Young Dro, Pastor Troy, Yung Joc and many more. After an afternoon of partying with a purpose, The Dream raised $137,000 for the Mayor’s Youth Scholarship Program.

#AJCPeachtreeRoadRace

Most Americans celebrate the Fourth of July with BBQ celebrations and fireworks but in Atlanta, we like to wake up before the sun rises to participate in the largest 10k in the world, the AJC Peachtree Road Race. With more than 50,000 participants and thousands of spectators along the 6.2-mile course, the Peachtree Road Race is the epitome of community. Whether participants are from another city or another country, everyone is an Atlantan – even if it’s just for a few hours.

#DisabilityPrideMonth

In honor of Disability Pride Month, the Mayor’s Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (MOEDI) and its Division of Disability Access and ADA Compliance curated a month of intentional, thoughtful events and activations to highlight its ongoing commitment to advancing accessibility and inclusion for all. Throughout July, MOEDI was joined by Atlanta’s accessibility partners and advocates to educate the community on valuable information and introduce services from entrepreneurs with disabilities. Atlanta should be accessible to everyone.

#CampBestFriendsTakesFIFAClubWorldCup

As part of the City’s commitment to making the FIFA World Cup 2026™ a shared experience, campers from Atlanta’s Camp Best Friends attended two FIFA Club World Cup matches this summer. Mayor Dickens and Parks Commissioner Justin Cutler joined in celebrating this special moment, made possible through collaboration with Showcase Atlanta, MARTA, and community partners. Events like this ensure Atlanta’s young people aren’t just watching history—they’re part of it.

#WelcomeSage

This month, Sage officially opened its new North American headquarters at Ponce City Market. This new state-of-the-art office space includes a learning center where small and medium sized businesses can get customized service from experts to support their business growth. The space is also designed to include an incubator space and meeting space for community groups and to foster collaboration. By opening its doors in our city, the grand opening demonstrates a level of confidence in Atlanta, particularly under Mayor Dickens’ leadership.
